Environmental- and social aspects
Environmental and social aspects are playing an increasingly larger role in our society. Since 1 July 2001 the Dutch government only reinsures export transactions and investments if the export or project that the export is part of does not, in its opinion, have an unacceptable environmental and social impacts on the country of destination.
Atradius therefore performs a review of environmental and social impacts on export transactions and investments that are to be reinsured by the Government of more than EUR 10 million. The review has to comply with the agreements that have been made in the OECD (“Common Approaches”, 12 June 2007) and with the Dutch Government (see download for the Dutch Policy document). If it is clear that a transaction or project under the EUR 10 million-threshold will result in major environmental and social damage, the application will also have to be analysed for environmental and social impacts. The same applies to works in or near sensitive areas. Atradius balances the positive, neutral and negative environmental and social impacts of the entire project to which your export transaction or project contributes. The elements for assessment on the environmental and social impacts focus on the sector, location and applied technology. As part of the review the project information will be benchmarked against the relevant IFC Performance Standards For the insurance of capital goods, services and construction transactions and also for investments the environmental and social impacts will be reviewed.
