Internal Economic Situation
Recovering From Deep Recession

General situation
As a small and open economy, Slovenia experienced a deep recession in 2009: real GDP declined by 8.1% because of a drop in exports of 17.7% and gross fixed investments by 21.6%; industrial output fell by 17.6%. In 2010 a moderate recovery of exports is compensating for a further decline in domestic demand and construction, resulting in a meagre GDP-growth of appr. 1%. Low rate of inflation despite an uptick in 2010Q2 to 2.1% yoy. Good score on the TI-corruption index: 27th out of 178.

External Economic Situation :  Rather Solid

Main sources of foreign exchange
Industrial products: machinery, transports, textiles, leather products; tourism.

Main foreign markets
EU (67%), of which Germany 22%, Italy 13% and Austria 9%; Croatia (9%).

Main expenses of foreign exchange
Capital goods, intermediate products; fuel.

Balance of payments
Because imports collapsed even harder than exports, Slovenia’s trade/current account deficits have fallen. In June 2004 Slovenia entered ERM-2, on 1/1/2007 followed by eurozone -membership. Occasionally net FDI are negative as Slovenian corporates expand into neighbouring countries.
